1980 Edition 6
Our 6th trip to The Vault for the 1980 version of the Post Pattern recapped Week 11 of the NFL season. While this issue is only 2 pages, we think you'll agree they are still quite memorable. The first page is the standard picking update (one highlight...commentary includes stating that all the Impeccables picked the exact same teams for that week, a first in history...I bet they all looked at the CBS Sports App before deciding). Page 2 is where we think you'll really crack a smile this week. "Lady Matriach Mundo Buboltz" (a.ka. Lauretta...Great Great Grandmother to some of Al's Pals) laid down the gauntlet of trivia questions for her family and even offered up a prize.
I've included the Week 11 game, when Green Bay traveled to the Meadowlands to take on the New York Football Giants (and those amazing helmets!). The venerable Vin Scully was on the mic for the game to narrate this contest. Lynn Dickey threw for 331 yards and 2 touchdowns along with two interceptions. As always, his primary target, James Lofton, had a monster day. Lofton hauled in 8 passes for 175 yards and a score. The two headed backfield of Ellis and Ivery combined for 118 yards and a score on 25 carries (4.7 YPC). However, 2nd year Giants quarterback Phil Simms lead an aerial assault of his own, throwing for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions. Turnovers (and as noted below, poor play from Estus Hood), contributed to a 27-21 defeat for the Pack.
One side note from this game, late in the first half Simms was scrambling out of the pocket while being pressured by Ezra Johnson. Simms decided to simply throw the ball out of bounds to avoid the hit/loss of yards, something extremely common today. Vin Scully and George Allen initially seemed to think it should be a penalty (Starr and the Packers sideline agreed), and Allen eventaully felt it was an intelligent play. Something we see as common today was seemingly new and noteworthy in 1980.
