Special "Post Season" Edition!

If you're like the staff at The Post Pattern, you may want something to take your mind off the Packers third straight loss.  While normally we post a newsletter every few weeks, we wanted to provide some updates on how our family competitor's post season is progressing and provide some information on this upcoming weekend!

Starting in football, the Brillion Lions season came to an end this past Friday as the Lions were blanked by Southern Door. Seen in the crowd that night was AJ Dillon, however from the scoreboard one could be forgiven if they thought #28 was suited up for the Eagles (who share their nickname with Dillon's alma mater). There is no truth to the rumor that Coach Keller repeated John McCay's line about his team's execution after the game.

Staying in Brillion, the Lady Lions successfully advanced through 2 rounds of playoff competition in victories against Mishicot (3-0) and Valders (3-1) before running into a strong Oostburg team.  Congratulations to sophomore Ella Kuchenbecker who played a significant role in the Lady Lions success this year on their way to a 21-11 record.  Ella finished her season with 67 kills, 36 blocks, and even managed to score a service ace! As several members of the team graduate this year, Ella will be looked to as a leader on next year's squad.

Moving to Lake Mills, the Lakeside Lutheran football team won a thrilling Level I game 23-20 vs Edgewood in a game that saw Lakeside protect their lead with a game sealing interception in the closing minutes to advance to the next round.  Coach Vanderhoof is actively preparing his team this week to take on "Goliath", more commonly known as Catholic Memorial.  Kickoff is at 7:15 PM this Friday (10/28) at Schneider Stadium on the grounds of Carroll University. (We're still looking to find a video stream, but the audio stream can be found on WKTI 94.5 ESPN).

In Cross Country, this has been an eventful week for both the Kettle Moraine Lutheran and Lakeside Lutheran teams.  The week got off to a great start when in the latest coaches poll , KML cracked the rankings for the first time this year at #16.  The good news kept coming as the Lakeside team moved up 1 spot to earn the #1 ranking in D2. With these rankings in hand, both teams set out for the sectionals meets.  Out of the 15 teams at each sectional, only the top 2 teams would qualify for the state meet.

Buoyed by their new ranking, the Lakeside team dominated the Parkside Sectional on their way to a 1st place result.  They swept the top 3 spots in the race and won with an astounding 33 points. As Lakeside's Athletic Director put it, "This was the equivalent of a running clock or mercy rule in other sports!" Jack Simmons placed 18th in the race and now will enjoy a trip to the state competition on Saturday, October 29th.

In the Portage Sectional, the situation was a little more tense in what proved to be a hard fought contest for Micah Vanderhoof and the KML team.  Most XC events provide a chip on the runners bibs so the runners time is automatically scored when they hit the finish line and team results are easily tabulated. In Portage, chips were not provided so each runner's place had to be manually checked.  This lead to the final results not being announced until the awards ceremony. As the announcer started with the 15th place team and worked his way up, the tension grew as they approached the final few teams and KML's name hadn't yet been called.  When it was announced that Port Washington landed in third place, cheers of joy erupted from the KML faithful as they knew the team had secured their first ever trip to the state meet!

Earlier this season The Post Pattern wrote about how exciting it was for cousins Jack and Micah to compete against each other at the high school level.  Now as Micah laces up his shoes for the last time as a HS cross country athlete, he'll once again run alongside Jack but this time at the WIAA D2 Cross Country Championship!

If any of our readers care to cheer for our runners in person, the meet will be held at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.  The boys will run at 2:35 PM and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Tickets can be purchased here . A comprehensive guide which includes course map, can be found here. If you're looking for a ride, caravans will be departing from Appleton, Brillion, Menomonee Falls, and Windsor. Good luck Micah and Jack!

We congratulate all our athletes who competed in the fall sports this year. From long touchdown runs and karate belts earned to long service streaks, blocks, digs, and kills...the Buboltz clan has enjoyed a memorable sports season. We can only hope the success our athletes enjoyed rubs off on the Green and Gold!
