2023 Sports Roundup
Spring/Summer Recap
As we mentioned in our sign off last season, the Buboltz crew had a full slate of spring sports to keep them busy. Softball, track and field, gymnastics, basketball, and more kept everyone quite busy and we're happy to share some of the highlights with you all here.
Starting in softball, sophomore Ella Kuchenbecker continued chasing her sister's accomplishments as she made her own marks in the Brillion stat sheets. While Ella's team placed 5th in conference, #5 for the Lady Lions had a sizzling .433 batting average while knocking in 22 RBIs (including 1 HR). Ella had 3 games with 3 hits and had another game where she reached base 5 times and knocked in 4 RBIs. You can read more about Ella's stats on the MaxPreps website.
Please join us in congratulating Ella as she was named 2nd team all-conference as a infielder!
Switching over to Track and Field, we have a wealth of content to share. Grace, Micah, and Madelyn Vanderhoof joined cousin Jack Simmons as competitors in the spring season.
While there were many memorable moments this season, a few are sure to stand out. For starters, on May 5th, Madelyn, Micah, and Jack got to compete on the same stage at the Lutheran Invitational. Noelle Vanderhoof got things started with a beautiful rendition of our national anthem (her 2nd performance of the season). While the Lakeside boys team took home the win, Micah's performance in the 800M and 4x800M was a sign of good things to come.
Jack, in his first year of track and field ran a variety of events including the 800M, 1600M, 3200M, and the 4x800M relay. He saved his best race for last as he ran a 2:10 800M and won his heat at the Regional meet in Waupon. In this video, you can hear Jack's coach encourage him to "settle in" after a fast start, only to realize there was plenty still in the tank!
Micah, who continued his growth from the XC season, finished his high school career with a bang. Not only did he secure his place in Buboltz lore, Micah added his name in the KML record books as well. While competing in events including the 800M (Sectional Qualifier), 1600M, and 3200M, Micah saved his best for the 4x800M relay. He and his teammates set a school record and earned their trip to La Crosse for the state meet! This was Micah's second trip to state in his senior season as his team qualifed for the cross country state championship earlier in the fall.
For his track efforts, Micah was named 2nd Team All Conference in the 4x800. As we go to press, Micah has just settled in to his new residence in New Ulm, MN (someone may need to check in on Mom and Dad) where he will be continuing his education at MLC to pursue a career in music education. Micah will take his speed with him as he joins the MLC Cross Country team in the fall. For those interested, his schedule can be found here.
Not to be outdone by the boys, Madelyn demonstrated her leadership abilities by being named team captain for the Lakeside women's track team. Madelyn displayed her atheltic ability as she competed in a variety of events including the 100M, 200M, 4x100M relay, 4x200M relay, and the High Jump.
Madelyn made Coach Vanderhoof (and mom) proud by qualifying for sectionals in both the 4x100 and the 4X200. It was great fun to watch her compete in the High Jump as well, while getting some sage advice from Coach Vanderhoof in this event.
Madelyn was named 2nd team all conference in the 4x100M and 4x200M relays. She finishes her high school career as a 3x letter winner, 2x team captain, 1x regional team champ, 2x event conference champ (4x100/4x200 relay), 1x regional event champ (4x200), 3x 1st Team All Conference, 4x 2nd Team All-Conference, and 6x Sectional Qualifier. I'm tired just writing all that.
Madelyn will be taking her talents to Milwaukee where she'll attend Wisconsin Lutheran College and pursue a major in English with a minor in Business. While there she will also continue her athletic career by joining the Lady Warriors track and field team.
Wrapping up our coverage of high school track and field, the Post Pattern would like to extend a HUGE congratulations to Coach Vanderhoof and the Lakeside Lutheran boys track team as they brought home the Division 2 gold ball as champions. The team overcame adversity and clinched the title in the last event of the day in a thrilling moment! Way to go Coach V!
In other summer sports news, Noelle Vanderhoof's Pom squad kept golfers company at the Lakeside golf outing (a fund raiser for the atheltic department). Her cheering must have worked, as the Post Pattern's editor and team took home 2nd place in the tournament with a blistering 11 under (61).
Noelle has been elected of the team captains for their upcoming season.
Not to be shown up by her older siblings, Hannah Vanderhoof had quite the eventful summer herself. Hannah competed in track for her grade school (TSL in Watertown) and also played softball for the Junior Warriors team.
In track, Hannah qualified for the Lutheran Schools State Track Meet in both the Long Jump and the 4x100.
In softball, Hannah's team took 3rd place in their end-of-season tournament. Hannah primarily played short stop and also covered first base.
Even though the competition season for gymnastics is several months away, summer is when gymnasts train on new skills and prepare for the season. Gwen Simmons has been a gym rat all summer as she prepares for competing in Level 9. Our staff paid off one of Gwen's teammates to get us this insider footage of some of her new skills.
As the Spring/Summer wrap up was so extensive, we'll save our Fall preview for our next episode so you'll have to wait for your football/volleyball/cross country fix until then! As always, if you have content you'd like to share reach out to our editor.
