Buboltz Sports Roundup
State Cross Country Highlights
While it only FEELS like the Packers season is over (the schedule tells me they still have 6 games left), the fall season for our Buboltz athletes actually HAS come to end. While we covered the end of most of our athletes fall season in the last edition, two of our competitors were fortunate enough to compete on the state's highest stage.
On Saturday, October 29th the Kettle Moraine Lutheran and Lakeside Lutheran boys cross country teams competed in the 2022 D2 Cross Country Championship at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
An estimated 10,000 spectators, including a crew of about 25 from our clan showed up to cheer on the runners. What started out as a cold October morning turned into a very pleasant afternoon for the race.
As the runners started their warm-ups, the Lakeside team received some bad news as one of their better runners, Dan Ertman, encountered a knee injury that prevented him from running. Dan is known for wearing his signature headband during the race and in a touching moment, Jack Simmons offered to wear it during the the race. While claiming he just needed to "keep the hair out of his eyes", Jack mentioned that about halfway through the race he thought of Dan and it gave him a boost.
With the starting clock counting down, our spectators spread out around the course to offer the runners encouragement throughout the race. One of the benefits of the Ridges course is that fans can see the runners multiple times during the course if they are willing to move around a bit. For this race, many of our fans joined the masses at the start of the race while others warmed up their legs to move around a bit more. Finally, the starting gun sounded for the last time this season and the race had begun!
Around the half mile point, the runners where still relatively bunched up. A few of the Lakeside athletes moved towards the front, while Jack and Micah settled in around the middle of the pack.
These next two videos show our guys running up a grueling hill. After nearly 2 miles of running, to send runners up a hill like this, one might think the course designers had a cruel disposition.
Micah dominating this hill like a boss.
The final few hundred meters finish with an uphill grind. At the beginning of this shot, you can see the gap between Jack and a large pack of runners as they start the climb. By the time they hit the finish line he caught several from that pack to help his team.
In our final video, we get to see Micah close out his high school career as he literally rides off into the sunset (just a little off centered).
When the dust finally settled, Micah finished his last race in style as the 4th runner for KML while cracking the top 100 runners in the team competition. While KML didn't finish where they wanted, ending up the year as the 16th ranked team in the state is an impressive achievement.
The Lakeside team finished as the state runner's up. Jack was 5th on his team (with a time right at his PR) and 53rd overall in the team competition. As their team only loses 1 runner from this year's squad, next year's campaign will come with high expectations.
Congrats to both guys on a memorable season!
*Editors note* You can read more about the Lakeside results in an article by the Lake Mills Leader where Jack is quoted here:
